On the weekend I was discussing the
campaign with my missus and her brother Dave, who just happened to be around on
Sunday night.
Now Dave has never done any wargaming or
rpging before and he was showing a bit of interest in how the campaign was
going. After a while, being the nerd that he is, he decided to get on the
internet, rather than to continue to talk to Amanda and I, to check it out for
himself.
Fast forward an hour and about six beers
where we talked generally about wargaming and rpging and Dave asked a fairly
pointed question about what can a player do?
And you know I didn’t just have a nice
simple answer for him. It consisted of things like you can move and shoot and
you know, do other stuff.
So clearly this is not a very satisfactory
answer and simply throwing a noob a copy of the rules isn’t going to help
anyone, especially when the noob has no background in wargaming or rpging.
And, you know, Dave was showing a bit of
interest and I think he wants to be a character to help us out because I’m not
really looking after his sister that well and I think he wants to bring his dog
Codie into the game as well. So I figured I’d knock up a simple index card to provide
a new player with a menu of actions they can take in any one activation
together with some page reference page numbers so that they can look them up
themselves should they find the energy at some stage.
And so I present the Players Guide to All
Things Zombie. It’s simply a list of actions that a player can take and that
you, as the DM or GM, can help them with the details.
And an advanced version for those who want
to know a little more.
There you go Dave, you can do any of those
things mate. Hopefully that’s removed a little of the mystery for you.
Just copy the image, resize it and print it out.
Now, by the way, if any of your out there have spotted any
errors or omissions, please get back to me and I’ll give em a little tune up.

What a great idea and an excellent resource for new players.
ReplyDeleteThanks Bryan. Too tell you the truth, it makes it a bit easier for me to find stuff in the rules too.
DeleteGreat idea.
ReplyDeleteI'd take it up too, if I had the luxury of having player participation
Hahaha. I don't know how Ed runs games with 20 people. Chaos.
DeleteSeriously it's pretty easy. I talk them through the In Sight, shoot, etc. tables with examples. Then after about three turns they have them memorized. They move their own figure and when the zeds move they help move the ones nearest them. When it's melee time it's easy to find another player wanting to roll for the zeds.
DeleteI play two teams and when one team has been eliminated then it's a free for all.
Sounds great Ed. Well it's Friday here in Aus and I fly back home tonight after work so I'm looking forward to tomorrow getting on with the rest of the game.
DeleteBeen a tense little week really, not knowing if my missus and I are going to get out of the pickle we're in at the moment.
You've done a cracking job on these - I love the artwork!
ReplyDeleteHope you don't mind, but I've just HAD to add them to my own resources! :-)
That's more than ok Joe, in fact I'm honoured. Mate I've 'borrowed' plenty of inspiration from your website over the years. I think I can remember about 2 or 3 years ago you had an excellent article on a store that you had made and how you built all the stands and put fruit, vegetables, canned goods etc. Great stuff. All of the sudden I went out and picked up some DAS and started to make my own.
DeleteThis is great! Thank you for the resource!
ReplyDeleteNo problem Nicholas. Great to hear that it's useful.
